Sex Toys During Pregnancy

Pregnant and finding yourself hornier than ever? This is something that happens to a LOT of women during pregnancy. And, if your partner isn’t as keen on getting down and dirty as you are, you may have found yourself reaching for your trusty vibrator before wondering if it’s safe for you to use.

Many expectant parents find themselves wondering the same thing. With so much talk about what you can’t do when pregnant, it can feel like there’s not much certainty about what you can do!

The question of sex toys and pregnancy often sparks a mix of curiosity and concern. Buckle up, babes, because we're about to tackle some spicy questions about using sex toys when you’re expecting.

Will Vibrators Cause Miscarriage?

One of your main concerns when expecting may be a miscarriage, and you could be wondering about any links between vibrators or sex toys and miscarriages.

The good news is that in most cases, sex toys and vibrators are unlikely to cause any issues that will lead to miscarriage. Miscarriages usually occur when there are chromosomal abnormalities or underlying health issues, not usually because of external factors like sex or using a vibrator!

As long as your pregnancy is progressing as expected, you should be fine with (relatively vanilla) sexual activity.

Are Vibrators Safe In The Third Trimester?

So, you’re in the final stages of your pregnancy and baby is nearly here - how exciting!

As your pregnancy progresses you might have questions about the safety of using vibrators, particularly when you’re so close to giving birth in the third trimester.

As a rule of thumb, it’s usually fine to use vibrators, sex toys and sex throughout every stage of your pregnancy, unless your doctor or midwife has told you otherwise.

A penis or penetrative sex toy won’t penetrate beyond your vagina and your baby won’t be aware of what is going on. Your baby is safely protected and the mucus plug seals the cervix, helping guard against infection.

However, it is important to be gentle and a little more cautious when having sex. As long as you’re comfortable, most sexual positions are OK and oral sex is also fine. Sex toys can be a great way to take your mind off some of the discomforts of pregnancy and masturbation in general is a great stress reliever!

Just make sure to communicate openly with your healthcare provider and partner to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

Choosing Safe Sex Toys During Pregnancy

Care should be taken when choosing any sex toy! Your vagina and vulva deserve the best and you must choose sex toys that are from a reputable seller. Look for toys made from body-safe silicone or glass when picking your buzzing and thrusting besties as they’re easy to clean.

Infection can be an increased risk during pregnancy. You should already be cleaning your toys after every single use (yes, EVERY single use) anyway to keep them lasting as long as possible and to stop nasty bacteria building up between uses.

Make sure you’re very aware of cleaning your toys and if in doubt, give them another quick clean before you use them during pregnancy. We already have a blog about how to properly clean your sex toys, so make sure to check it out if you need a little refresher.

 STIs and Pregnancy

Pregnant or not, STIs can still be passed between people using sex toys, so if you are in a non-monogamous relationship or sharing with different partners you need to take extra precautions.

STIs are still very real in pregnancy, and some can harm your baby and your pregnancy. Even more caution is needed, so be extra careful if you’re unsure of your partner's sexual activity and history. Make sure they’ve been tested and are negative first!

Speak To Your Healthcare Provider If Something Feels Wrong

As with any issues during pregnancy, if you feel something may be the matter then it’s best to speak to your healthcare provider. If using your toys as usual feels wrong, then there is no harm in getting checked out.

Each pregnancy is unique, so speaking to your doctor or midwife before bringing toys into the bedroom or engaging in sexual activity is always the best. Plus, if you’re already concerned about the effect sex and vibrators have on your baby, you’ll probably enjoy sex a lot more once you get the all-clear.

So, Are Sex Toys Safe During Pregnancy?

Basically, yes! If you’re pregnant it doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your orgasms.

You may find that throughout your pregnancy you’ll have periods where you’re less interested or more interested in sex, but as long as you have a low-risk pregnancy and check in with your healthcare provider, you should be fine.
